A Brief History of
East Texas Barber School!
Initially founded on November 19, 1958, East Texas Barber School has been in continuous operation under various barber school names. The school was initially located "on the square" in Tyler and is presently located in W.C. Square, on the corner of Front Street and Bonner Avenue in Tyler, Texas.
East Texas Barber School has enjoyed a good professional reputation under each of its owners with the city, its students, employers of the graduates and the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
Meet Our Staff!
Ricky Stripling, President of East Texas Barber School, graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1974 with a degree in Agriculture Education. After graduation, Ricky served as a Vocational Ag. teacher in Raymondville Texas.
Upon returning to his hometown of Tyler, Ricky worked at W. C. Supply for 32 years prior to joining the barber school in 2009.
A Class "A" Barber and Licensed Instructor, Ricky handles admissions, works on finical aid, and sends in all state paper work.
D'Ann Stripling, a 1977 graduate of UT Tyler, is a homemaker, wife, mother, and devoted grandmother. She spends her off-time training and showing her Appaloosa horses.
D’Ann's job responsibilities at East Texas Barber School include running the front office, greeting customers, purchasing local supplies, and passing out the bubble gum! She loves children and wants them to leave with a smile!
Shelia Stripling is a graduate of East Texas Barber School with a Class "A" Barber license. She has also completed her barber instructor education. Shelia assists new students on the floor and works with the classroom and floor instructors.
When she is not hard at work at the barber school, Shelia, her husband, Travis and their son, Spencer, work at raising and training bucking bulls at their Family Affair Bucking Bulls Ranch.
When the Striplings' purchased the barber school in 2009, Ms. Rosa already been with the school for six years.
Rosa is a Class "A" Barber and holds a Texas Barber instructor license. She also owns a party rental business.
Ms. Rosa is bilingual (Spanish/ English) and assists our Spanish-speaking students and customers.
Renee’ Jimerson became part of our staff in 2010 as our Braiding Instructor.
Renee' attended Aladdin Beauty College in 1991. Before joining East Texas Barber School, she was employed at Blockbuster as a manager for 8 years. Her off time is spent shopping with friends and her daughter Ja’Mya.
James Jimerson, affectionately known as Mr. J, is a graduate of Careers Unlimited Barber School. Upon receiving his Class "A" Barber license, he went straight to work in his own shop - Klose Kutz Barber Shop.
James has been with the school since 2009 as Director of Education. James is full of knowledge and loves to pass it on to those who seek it.
Aside from being a barber, James’ passion is for his family, Renee’ and Ja’Mya, first and fishing second. Don’t start a conversation about fishing unless you have plenty of time.
